In the construction of smart cities, efficient municipal waste management is an important public service, which often encompasses daily garbage collection and urban sanitation operations. Keeping thousands of trash bins in a clean status across the whole metropolitan area is of great importance for public health, but it is also a quite challenge for daily operations. There is where IoT solutions take into role, transforming traditional and manual waste collection into an automatic and data-driven smart city operation.
Desafio
In Turkey, thousands of trash bins were placed on streets in major urban areas to collect trash. However, sanitation departments struggled to know which and when the bin has been emptied. Traditionally manual inspections and paper-based recordings proved to be outdated, as they lack real-time updates and cannot be shared among workers. The overall sanitation management lacked visibility into these thousands of bins across the whole city. Without precise location data and status updates, garbage trucks could only operate on fixed routes, which often resulted in visiting half-empty bins while overflowing bins went unserviced. Workers were also burdened with manually recording bin status. The hygiene management within the city urgently needs a much smarter monitoring method.
Solução
To overcome such problems, our client introduced a smart waste monitoring system. The solution installed one M2 asset tracking tag on every garbage bin to broadcast its unique ID and real-time operational status via Bluetooth Low Energy signals. Drivers on the garbage collection trucks have been equipped a smart phone with a dedicated application. Once the cleaner approached the trash bins, the smart phone with application could scan the BLE signals sent from our tags. When a bin is lifted and tilted onto a garbage truck for emptying, the built-in 3-axis accelerometer of tag detects the spatial orientation change and automatically marks the event as an “Emptying Action”. Via cellular network of smart phones, the event and relevant location will be transmitted to the platform automatically.
Via this method, the solution helps to automatically record emptied bins, thereby improving data accuracy greatly. By utilizing the location of every bin, the system helps optimize truck routes to avoid unnecessary trips. Moreover, workers do not need to record bin status manually any more, significantly enhancing their efficiency and eliminating manual errors. By turning passive waste bins into smarter trackable assets, this IoT-enabled smart waste management system successfully bridges the gap between physical infrastructure and municipal digital management, empowering cities to operate more efficiently and sustainably.
