Automating Fleet Management: Real-time Cargo Detection via ToF Sensors

In fleet management, real-time visibility of cargo status is essential for optimal scheduling operations. Such function could be easily achieved by manual inspections when the vehicle number is small. However, a fleet with a large number of vehicles often struggles to balance efficiency with budget constraints. Finding a method to realize reliable and cost-effective monitoring is a critical challenge for expanded operations. This is where IoT solutions come into play, delivering real-time cargo visibility with a limited budget.

Challenge

In America, a fleet manager faced heavy operational headaches regarding cargo status in fleet management. At the beginning, this fleet relied on manual inspections, needing to arrange one specific employee to physically check whether each vehicle loaded the cargo. However, as the fleet grew gradually, this workflow proved to be a labor-intensive and error-prone process. Also, it was completely impossible to provide real-time updates to dispatchers.

To automate cargo detection, the fleet introduced traditional radar and ultrasound devices. Even though these devices successfully showed the precise cargo status, their high unit cost made it economically unfeasible to equip hundreds of vehicles in the whole fleet. This fleet urgently required a more budget-friendly and scalable alternative to achieve automatic cargo detection in real time.

Solution

To handle such problems with a lower expense, the fleet introduced an innovative BLE cargo sensing solution. One compact Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor was mounted on the cargo shelf of each vehicle. By measuring the precise time when light pulses are reflected from the surface, the ToF sensor calculates the accurate distances to determine space availability and loading verification. At the same time, this solution seamlessly leverages the previously installed cellular trackers as BLE gateways to eliminate additional networking costs. These trackers automatically scan the local BLE signals emitted by ToF sensors and transmit real-time cargo data directly to the central management platform via cellular networks.

By adopting this smart solution, the fleet replaced expensive radar hardware with cost-effective Bluetooth ToF sensors, significantly cutting down costs and achieving seamless scalability across the entire fleet. Not only does it free the staff from tedious cargo checks, but also it delivers automatic capacity visibility to optimize the overall fleet utilization. From the starting point to the terminal, every load becomes smarter and more reliable.

Featured Product

The S02R sensor is a BLE 5.0 beacon using Time-of-Flight technology for distance measurement. With its 600mAh battery and periodic working mechanism, the product guarantees a lifespan of more than 3 years. Ideal for real-time usage monitoring and stock management in both smart offices and warehouses, as well as cargo status monitoring in fleet management.
