Nowadays, more and more businesses move into modern office buildings to conduct daily operations. To keep the overall environment tidy, the cleanliness of restrooms is of great importance. However, traditional manual inspections could hardly achieve real-time cleaning services due to fluctuant usage levels. There is where IoT solutions make sense, monitoring the real using conditions and delivering instant notifications when cleaning work is required.
In an office building in India, maintaining clean and well-stocked restrooms was a constant operational challenge for the facility management team. These restrooms are distributed in multiple floors and on different sides of the building. The usage levels of toilet paper and trash bin would be various due to different usage patterns. Toilet paper consumption and garbage accumulation may change in an unpredictable method, largely because of the differences in employee number or meeting room occupancy in each area. High-flow restrooms near busy locations may use up toilet paper or fill trash bins within a few hours, while less frequently used ones might need several days. As a result, relying on fixed cleaning schedules often led to either unnecessary maintenance visits or delayed responses to actual service needs.
To solve these problems, a Bluetooth-powered solution has been introduced to replace frequent manual inspections. Within this solution, the core would be the installation of ToF (Time of Flight) sensors. They have been installed to detect the usage of every paper holder and trash bin. With a millimeter-level measuring accuracy, these sensors offer real-time monitoring within every toilet.
Toilet Paper Usage Monitoring: ToF sensor is mounted on the roll holder to identify remaining amount through detecting thickness of roll paper. The distance between the sensor and a full roll of toilet paper reaches the minimum value and is relatively fixed. As toilet paper is being used gradually, diameter of the paper roll gradually decreases, such distance will increase.
Trash Management: Similarly, these sensors are also deployed on the inner lid of trash bin to detect whether they are full. When the bin is empty, the distance between the sensor and bin bottom is at its maximum; as trash accumulates, the distance will gradually shorten accordingly.
By setting proper thresholds, these devices would identify when paper will be used up and bin is going to be full. Once the measuring range goes beyond these safety thresholds, sensors would trigger an instant alert to the platform via nearby BLE to Wi-Fi gateway. Cleaning workers will be notified about it along with a specific location soon, enabling them directly to the targeted toilet to conduct cleaning services. Such method not only eliminates manual checks, but always keeps toilets in a tidy situation at all times.
S02R is a compact ToF sensor based on BLE 5.0 connectivity. Utilizing advanced Time of Flight technology, the beacon could achieve a high measuring accuracy to millimeter-level. With a built-in 600mAh replaceable battery, it reaches a durable 3-year lifespan, reducing device maintenance. Ideal for real-time usage monitoring like paper holders, trash cans or even warehousing inventory levels.
