Data Center Assets Security & Access Control with Bluetooth® IoT

In high-security data centers, where data sensitivity is paramount and data center access control is stringent, traditional management methods often fall short. In the past, staff managed most tasks manually. This often led to errors and required a large workforce. As data centers grow, many operators are turning to IoT access control solutions. Bluetooth-based systems can improve operational efficiency, strengthen security, and reduce manual workload in secure data center environments.

Challenge

A client in Southeast Asia faced several key challenges in their data center access control system. The facility only allows internal network use. All systems must stay offline for security reasons. Staff use special thumb drives to transfer data from non-secured computers to secured ones. All USB ports on secured computers are locked. Only these approved drives can be used.

To reduce risk, the thumb drives are kept in a locked key cabinet. Staff must track them at all times. Asset tracking in data centers becomes critical when dealing with such sensitive storage devices.

The client also needs to manage visitor access. Visitors can only enter specific areas and must be monitored during their stay. The data center has limited personnel. It is difficult to meet all security needs with a small team. The client wanted a simple and secure way to manage both assets and people through an integrated access control system.

Solution

The client chose MOKO’s Bluetooth-based IoT solution. They attached an M4 Lite Bluetooth tag to each secure thumb drive. This tag allows real-time tracking within the building. It uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which helps reduce power use and works reliably indoors.

Moreover, a B2 Smart Badge is equipped with every visitor to control data center access and track visitor location. The badge also improves safety by showing who is in which area at any time. This visitor access control system helps staff limit access without extra effort.

The system uses the MKGW3 Bluetooth Gateway to collect data from all tags and badges. The gateway sends information over the internal network to meet the client’s strict network policies.

After deploying the system, the client could track every secure thumb drive in real time, which reduces the risk of loss or misuse. These smart badges made visitor management in data centers easier and more accurate. Staff could monitor visitor movement and limit access without extra effort. The whole system ran smoothly within the internal network, keeping the data center access control efficient and secure.

Featured Products

The M4 Lite tag is a small BLE tag that is portable and easy to deploy in data center asset tracking. Compared with other asset tracking tags on the market, it achieves significant breakthroughs in cost, distance and sustainability, thus becoming the best choice for secure facility asset management in data centers. Moreover, its various firmware features enable it support multi-type asset tracking and positioning model, which allow users to change parameters as per different scenarios with much more flexibility.

B2 Smart Badge, a smart Bluetooth badge with SOS button and high-capacity battery, in the form of a holder so that you can combine the ID card and BLE communication in all-in-one fit. Additionally, remote reminder and alerts response can also be achieved to interact with the varied LED notification and buzzer mechanism, thus realizing the Geo fence alerts and restriction entrance alerts.

MKGW3 is a BLE to PoE Gateway based on Espressif ESP32 solution. With support for BLE 5.0, 2.4GHz WiFi, and Ethernet, it offers both wireless and wired connectivity options. Acting as a vital data bridge between your beacon and cloud server, MKGW3 efficiently gathers nearby beacon advertising data, transmitting it to your server via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Plus, enjoy two-way communication with Beacon devices for remote management from the cloud. Experience cost- effective, real-time location services, condition monitoring, asset tracking, and personal safety management like never before.
