In the modern retail landscape, understanding visitor behavior within shopping malls is of paramount importance. Accurate visitor analysis will offer valuable insights for mall management, further enabling store layout optimization and overall shopping experience enhancement. Traditionally, achieving such a goal is challenging as it often requires specific human resources. This is where the IoT solution comes into play, eliminating the need for excessive manual intervention.
In a crowded Spanish shopping mall, visitors come in and out in an endless stream. The high-traffic environment presents quite a challenge for the mall manager to conduct in-depth visitor analysis. One of the major challenges in visitor analysis for managers is the lack of a reliable method to collect visitor data. Traditional methods, like manual counting, are time-consuming and prone to being inaccurate. The staff need to count the number at the entrances, which not only requires a significant number of human resources, but also takes up a large part of the staff’s working hours. Also, these members might miss or repeat counting, especially during peak times.
Another significant issue is the difficulty in distinguishing between actual visitors and mall employees. In shopping malls, employees are constantly moving around to perform various tasks, which could be easily counted as well by mistake. This ambiguity will largely result in erroneous conclusions regarding visitor traffic patterns and the popularity of individual stores. Additionally, the vast area of shopping malls and the large number of stores further exacerbate the challenge of effectively monitoring visitor movements. Typically speaking, shopping malls span several floors and cover a huge expanse of land, with hundreds of stores offering a wide variety of products and services. In such a vast and complex environment, manual methods are simply not feasible.
To address such problems, an innovative IoT solution has been introduced. Bluetooth to cellular gateways have been strategically installed at the gates of shopping malls and also the entrance of every shops. These gateways have advanced scanning capabilities to detect passers-by with an active Bluetooth signal, usually from their cellphones.
Once a Bluetooth signal is detected, the gateway collects relevant data, which will be then transmitted to an online software platform. This platform provides users with a clear and intuitive visualization of visitor traffic trends. Managers can easily identify peak hours when the shopping mall is the most crowded, as well as determine which store is the most popular one. This real-time information enables them to make informed decisions regarding resource allocation and store operations.
To ensure the accuracy of the collected data, every employee in the shopping mall has been required to equip a Bluetooth wristband. These wristbands are uniquely remarked as Employee 1, Employee 2, and so on, clearly indicating the employee identity. Such pre-stored information of these employees will be excluded from the visitor statistics during data analysis processes. This will help in eliminating potential data bias caused by employee movements within the mall, providing a more accurate overview of actual visitors.
One notable feature of our gateway is its convenient charging method. It can be charged directly via USB, making it easy to maintain and ensuring uninterrupted data collection. This IoT-based visitor analysis solution offers an effective approach to understanding visitor behavior in shopping malls. It provides mall management with accurate and real-time insights, thereby driving informed decision-making and enhancing overall shopping experience for visitors.
