IoT visitor analytics solution for smart city crowd and traffic management

Economic growth, rapid urbanisation, and the expansion of smart city infrastructure have inevitably resulted in increased foot traffic across public spaces, especially in large urban areas with multi-million populations. Consequently, managing visitor flows effectively and in real time has emerged as one of the greatest challenges today. Wireless Bluetooth® technology, combined with LoRaWAN® connectivity, opens up new possibilities for visitor analytics monitoring and management, making a major difference.

Challenge

The United Nations projects that 68% of the global population will live in urban areas by 2050, placing enormous pressure on public spaces and city management systems. Whether it’s railway stations, shopping districts, public parks, or event venues, the way cities and relevant organisations handle their visitor flows is becoming increasingly important. Note this — poor visitor flow management is a resource-intensive problem and the costs of inefficient crowd management directly impact public safety and operational efficiency.

To optimize space utilization, improve overall city planning and support data-driven decisions, cities should track and monitor visitor movement and activity patterns in various public areas and popular hotspots in real time. Forward-looking city managers and facility operators grasp this simple concept — they have to know for sure when and where visitor density peaks occur; which areas are underutilised at any given time.

Also, they need reliable data and tools to optimize staff scheduling and resource allocation based on known visitor movement patterns. This helps them identify congestion hotspots before they become safety risks and keep better track of the public spaces they are responsible for managing and serving. Thanks to the LW003 Ultra Outdoor Bluetooth® Bridge and LoRaWAN® network infrastructure, these challenges can be overcome, helping achieve better results.

Solution

To solve such problems, we introduce an IoT visitor analytics solution to achieve better flow management and further city planning. In a German city, we strategically deploy LW003 Ultra outdoor Bluetooth® bridges at several key points, including railway stations, trash bins, public toilets – areas typically with high traffic. Because each smart device carried by passers-by continuously broadcasts a unique BLE signal at configurable intervals, LW003 Ultra bridges deployed at key locations scan, identify them and send this data, combined with time-stamped presence details, to a server for analysis and reports.

Special software conveniently displays visitor movement trends across monitored locations based on the density of detected BLE signals, peak hours, and dwell time patterns. What’s more, the cloud-based analytics platform allows managers to identify visitor flow trends across multiple locations simultaneously if needed.

It is important to make it clear that our focus is not to present the exact number of the crowds, but more to identify a trend. The reason could be that we cannot ensure all of these passers-by would turn on Bluetooth and provide location information. Under these circumstances, we acknowledge this approach has a limitation – relying solely on Bluetooth signals. Despite this, it totally protects the privacy safety of users. The data we collect enables us to gain a relatively clear view of the traffic flow, allowing relevant traffic employees and city planners to make informed decisions much more quickly and accurately. This process represents a practical application of smart city crowd analytics, enabling cities to optimize operations based on real-world data.
