BLE Point-of-Interest Solutions: Enhancing Art Appreciation Experience

When visitors explore exhibitions or museums, the introductory materials accompanying the collections play a pivotal role in deepening their understanding and appreciation. However, in an era where technology is increasingly integrated into our daily lives, demands for more interactive experiences have gradually grown. To meet it, we introduce a cutting-edge point-of-interest (POI) solution, enabling visitors to instantly access detailed information simply by getting closer.

Challenge

One of the unique challenges we faced was an Italian exhibition, where a significant number of statues are displayed in outdoor settings. Initially, the exhibition manager considered traditional wired POI solutions, but quickly encountered several problems.

Unlike indoor environments, which benefit from controlled environments and pre-existing infrastructure, this outdoor exhibition presents several obstacles for traditional wired solutions. The vast unstructured layout of outdoor space makes it quite difficult to deploy wired infrastructure, as installing cables across large and irregular area is logistically impractical and costly. Additionally, environmental factors, such as unpredictable weather conditions, pose significant risks to the reliability and lifespan of these wired electronic systems. To achieve interactive experience for visitors, a pressing need for a wireless POI solution capable of adapting to the outdoor exhibitions while maintaining robust connectivity has emerged.

Solution

To solve the problem, we develop an innovative IoT hardware solution leveraging BLE anchors. These anchors serve as wireless communication bridges between client’s mobile application and the artworks on exhibition, enabling auto-explanation of each piece as visitors approach it. Strategically placed on exhibition shelves or adjacent to the artworks, these anchors could ensure optimal and reliable coverage. As visitors approach an artwork, the nearby anchor will scan the BLE signals emitted by their smartphones. Once the signal is identified, the application will instantly deliver relevant information about the artwork.

Comparing to traditional forms, our BLE-based anchors offer a more reliable alternative in outdoor settings because of their waterproof shell and wireless design. Also, this hardware solution is highly scalable and will be easily adapted to various exhibition layouts and sizes. After setting well with software, our hardware will provide instant and relevant information about artworks, significantly enhancing visitors’ experiences.
