With continuous improvement of the life quality, an increasing number of people begin to pursue fresh foods. These foods, with a characteristic of easily being spoiled, usually need cold chain transportation and real-time temperature monitoring to keep freshness. Traditionally, without a stable method, foods may deteriorate during transportation under an undetectable circumstance. IoT solutions gradually gain attentions due to real-time temperature monitoring within such transportation applications.
Challenge
In Mexico, a transportation fleet is responsible for deliver fresh products from factory to market warehouse on a daily basis, usually including vegetables, fruits, meats and other foods. Normally, to avoid food spoilage, porters need to place a large number of ice cubes in the cold storage compartment to keep the optimal temperature throughout the whole journey. However, during the transportation process, drivers and warehouse staff will not get any temperature condition information of these transported foods. The lack of real-time and continuous temperature conditions make staff in a relatively reactive situation when facing accidental deviations. These problems possibly resulted by equipment failure or increased ice melting would only be detected after arrival.
Moreover, after the vehicle reaches the final destination, warehouse staff need to use thermometers to check temperature level and fresh states of foods in each compartment. This would be a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, which may potentially cause delays in unloading these goods. Relying on such undetected method and manual verification, the fleet usually faces limitations like food spoilage and sharply rising operation costs. There is an urgent need to call for a more automated and real-time temperature monitoring system.
Solution
Facing these problems, fleet manager has introduced an IoT-based temperature monitoring solution. This solution equips one BLE temperature logger within the refrigerated compartment of each vehicle. With a space-efficient size, the logger could be attached inside the carriage easily. After well deployment, it is able to capture uninterrupted temperature data during the whole transportation travel. In this solution, gateways, data transfer stations between loggers and the cloud platforms, have also been installed in both warehouses and vehicles to collect the temperature data. Via the cloud-based software, this solution enables managers to easily get real-time data about temperature conditions in every vehicle compartment.

Beyond this, the system also supports safety threshold settings and alarm triggers. If one temperature sensor detects abnormal fluctuations and exceeds preset threshold, the system will automatically report to notify both drivers and warehouse staff for quick responses. Further, with a robust 60,000 groups of sensor data storage, the system could also trace historic data for temperature change analysis, enabling predictive maintenance scheduling and spoilage risk assessments.
